Using time-series forecasting and real-time data to optimize waste collection systems
About Rebin
Rebin, founded on March 20, 2023, is a Belgian company specializing in innovative waste management solutions. The company has developed a system equipped with sensors that measure the fill levels of waste bins in real-time. This data is utilized to optimize collection routes, leading to more efficient waste management and a reduction in fuel consumption and COâ‚‚ emissions. Rebin collaborates with various Flemish municipalities and has expanded its services to international clients, including the Port of Rotterdam.

About the project
Rebin, a startup focused on waste management optimization, provided a dataset containing fill levels of bins collected via sensors over the past year and a half. The project involved cleaning and analyzing this data to identify key factors influencing the speed at which bins reach full capacity. After thorough preprocessing and feature engineering, predictive models were developed to estimate the number of days until a bin would become full. Additionally, a classification model was built to determine whether a bin would reach full capacity within a given timeframe (e.g., X days). These models aimed to optimize waste collection schedules by reducing unnecessary pickups and ensuring timely emptying before bins overflowed. The approach combined statistical analysis and machine learning techniques, emphasizing both accuracy and interpretability to provide actionable insights for Rebin’s operational planning.
